An Exquisite Risk

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope you will forgive my taking a pass on writing an article this month as I am in the midst of a huge move from Santa Cruz, California to Winnipeg, Manitoba. For those of you not familiar with Winnipeg, it is located in the center of Canada, just a few hours north of North Dakota, set in the prairies that Neil Young, a native of Winnipeg, loves to sing about. As you may have guessed, I am not moving for the weather or the scenery (although I am becoming increasingly smitten with the prairie skies). No, the only thing that could lure me away from my beloved Redwoods is a love that runs deeper than the ocean I hated to leave. Rob McInnes (who many of you know as my partner in Diversity World) and I jumped the proverbial broom in February of this last year after a long-awaited engagement. With my daughter going to college in Massachusetts and all of Rob’s family living in Winnipeg, it seemed a good idea to give life in Winnipeg a try.

So, on July 14th Rob and I packed up our home (and office) in a U-Haul truck, which we lovingly referred to as “Prairie Thunder”, and drove ourselves and all of worldly possession to Winnipeg. I am happy to report to you that only a week into this move, I am already feeling very much at home in our new nest and excited about all that I have to learn from this new adventure. Suffice it to say, however, that as I sit here among unpacked boxes and empty walls, I do not have it in me to write an article this month. Instead, I will give you our new phone number and address, and update you with my fall calendar. I do not expect that this move will change my work schedule much, except that I will not have as far to travel when working in the Midwest or on the East Coast. To my friends in California, however, I make an unabashed plea to suggest my name for future training and conferences as I will be anxious to return as often as I can.

In closing, I have chosen a poem I wrote in April as this month’s selection for Poem of the Month. As my heart fluttered with the obligatory panic one can expect before any such monumental transition, I awoke one morning to write “The Exquisite Risk”. I hope you enjoy it.

Until next month, Happy Summer!

Poem of the Month

The Exquisite Risk ** written by Denise Bissonnette **Sometimes my heart is a vagabond * in search of a place to lay its sleepy head. * Once rested, it is difficult to awaken from slumber. * But that is to miss the point of having a beating heart. * The heart is a ship, made for high seas… * The heart is a wild bird, drawn to untamed skies. * My heart loves the safe valley floor. * It paints the picket fence white, * whistling while it works, * loving in all ways safe and comfortable. * But the true homeland of the heart is in the horizon. * Gazing out at the long, twisted road * falling from eye’s view. * Learning to love in new ways, * ways radical, forgiving, less careful, more true. * Less anxious to worship those it adores; * More willing to wash the feet of those it does not yet understand. * The heart forever yearns to speak in a new tongue, * to move in ways it thought impossible. * It will settle on burning at a low flicker, * the small flame shining behind the window at twilight … * But oh, to be a blazing star of fire glowing in the deeper night – * That is its proper place. * The poet asks, “Are you breathing just a little and calling it a life?” * The heart whispers, “Keep me safe * and I will sing you sweet familiar songs * that lull you to sleep … * But take the exquisite risk * of allowing me to ache from the use of unused muscles, * perhaps to even break, again and again, * and you will hear songs falling from the throat of the very world, * the birds, The stones, the stars, and all that you dare to love. * Be warned: these songs are not lullabies; * They are clarion calls to a life you have only imagined.” ** Copyright Denise Bissonnette, Diversity World, 2006
